We had a first tonight in the ongoing potty-training quest. Eric was determined that Elena was going to actually produce on the toilet. And he won. :) She did it!
Eric watched Elena while I went to a meeting for my calling at church. When I came home, I could hear Eric reading "Old McDonald" to Elena and asking her if she wanted more milk to go with her chocolate, but I couldn't see either of them. I found them sitting on the (tile) kitchen floor, Eric with a couple of books next to him and Elena with no diaper, a piece of chocolate in hand, and a cup of milk.
His plan: get her system as full as possible (hence the two glasses of milk, fruit snacks, and chocolate), keep her naked so we could tell when she went, keep her on the tile (hence the books) so she didn't make a mess on the carpet, and ask her if she needed to go potty at every page turn. (Have you ever heard a two year old say "no" in a nice, but very frustrated and annoyed way? It's pretty cute.) He had been at it for an hour and a half when I got home. We sat there with her for another 10 minutes until she started peeing on the floor. At which point, we shouted excitedly (which I think scared her into stopping) and ran her into the bathroom, where she peed on the potty!!! HOORAY ELENA! She has sat on the potty a million times and never produced (even though the sitting on the potty is 99% of the time her idea). And tonight she finally did! Woohoo!
Here's Elena wearing her big girl panties and eating her reward - ice cream with m&m's and sprinkles (sprinkles are the best):
Hooray! I went potty!

Don't worry, we're not so naive as to think she's got it. As a nice reality check, she peed on the couch shortly after going in the potty. (And that's when the panties came off and the diaper went back on.) :) But, it was exciting for her to actually produce on the potty and hopefully its one step in the right direction.
Go Elena! :)
(Oh, and an unrelated flash update: at my doctor's appt. on Tuesday, he said he'll induce me on Thursday, February 4th. So, that is baby day if nothing else is :) Kind of uncanny though, Elena was induced on a Thursday which was also the 4th. Weird.... :)

and yay for feb. 4th!
Wahoo!!! and congrats on knowing the end date if not sooner! Sometimes you feel like you'll be preggers forever!!!
I think potty training is one of Heavenly Father's tricks to help parents learn self-control and patience. It's something they really can't control, but want very much. Good luck with the process! Remember--it's like every other skill a child learns . . . how to walk, how to talk, how to drink from a cup. Unfortunately, unlike those other skills, failures in the learning process of this one has a definite down side for the parents:)
And p.s., even if Elena does "get it" quickly, be ready for set-backs when Lily arrives!
That picture is awesome. I love it! Good work getting her to go in the potty.
Yeehaw Elena!
