Her ANC isn't just low, it's officially at zero. I hate that big fat 0 staring me in the face. She has no immune system. And near as we can tell, she has a cold. But her body can't handle it - she has pretty much no defenses. So, she is in the hospital being monitored and being given heavy duty antibiotics as a precaution while they wait for more testing to come back - blood cultures, viral panels, etc. to see if they can figure out exactly what's causing the fever. When your body doesn't have an immune system (or very little of one) a fever is the only sign that there is something wrong since your body can't mount the normal immune response to such and such problem.
Eric is at the hospital with her; Lily and I have to stay home because we are both recovering from colds ourselves. I hate not being there with her to comfort her and be on top of everything that is going on. This morning, Eric told me that she is crying and saying that everything hurts. I really hate not being there. Plus, I have about a million and one questions I want to ask the doctor. Blah. Stupid colds. Stupid cancer.
I was feeling pretty lonely and forlorn last night when Eric and Elena drove off into the snowy night without me. All of this now on top of our incessant worrying this weekend. I cried a lot and wished for some company. Heavenly Father is good and merciful and quick to hear my cries - what should happen, but a random text from my sister-in-law, Christy, at 10:30 asking how we were doing. The text turned into a phone call after my reply and I got to chat about anything and everything for 45 minutes and stop feeling so lonesome. I am so grateful for tender mercies like that. Out of all His children in the world with all their problems (most much worse than my own), He listened to me (being a baby) and blessed me with comfort. The Lord really is aware of us.
We saw a host of other blessings the last couple of days as well - I seriously can't even begin to name everyone who has been so thoughtful of us and shown so much love and support.
- Many kind messages (thanks for the support everyone - it means more than you know), a few visits, and tons of phone calls - including an especially tender one from my sister-in-law, Amy.
- My sister, Samantha, stepping in as a last minute babysitter, so Eric could finish a test
- An anonymous Christmas card filled with much needed help. Thank you!
- Family rallying behind us and organizing a family fast (Thanks for thinking of us Ju!)
- Packages from both my grandmas filled with Christmas cheer.
- A wonderful, surprise visit from strangers (but not strangers anymore! :)) stopping by with words of comfort and gifts to help our weekend go by quickly (Thanks again Darlene and Nicole!! It made my afternoon! Lily is IN LOVE with the doll and light up rubber ducky - she said "ducky" three times in the tub yesterday while she was playing with it -pretty impressive for a girl who only says like 3 1/2 words - she was that excited about it!)
- Eric's grandma, who has so much to worry about herself, calling to tell us she put Elena's name on the prayer roll at all the area temples.
And I could go on and on. We have been so blessed. We truly are surrounded by the best people. Thanks to all our wonderful family, friends, and ward members! Thank you for thinking of us and sharing the Christmas Spirit with us. You buoy us up when things get a little rough.

Oh no, so sad to hear! And not being able to be there must be even more trying. Do you think they would let you use something like Skype or Google's video chat to talk to Elena at the hospital? Would she even be able to on the unit she'd be on? I don't know all the details, but I remember reading somewhere that PCMC could set it up for you if you wanted to do that.
Anyways, Mason and I are keeping Elena and your family in our prayers.
Dear Briana, I love you and wish there was something more I could do. I pray for you and you're never far from my thoughts. I so admire your ability to see the blessings in all you're going through. You're such an amazing example to me.
wow, i do feel a little bit smarter. :)
0!! geez. that totally stinks. i'm so sorry you can't be there with elena and eric. i imagine that would be so hard. i so hope that the doctors can get this figured out soon so you all can be together.
i still think that is so neat that those ladies dropped by to visit. people like that make me want to be better, more caring, and more in tune with other people's needs. love you guys so much, and still thinking of you.
I am so sorry. I really wish I could be of some help. Not being able to be at the hospital is the worst. We are always thinking of your little family and wishing we could give each of you a big hug! Keep us updated.
I wish I could be there to bring you a meal, or something. We are praying for you and Elena!!
Elena is feeling much better this afternoon playing hide and go seek with the nurse! Hope the fever doesn't come back. Regardless, the doc thinks we should stay until Monday for the bone marrow aspirate.
-Eric
I'm glad she's feeling better! Blah, again! Briana I hope you and Lily get feeling better too!
We'll remember you in our prayers. Glad to hear Elena was doing better this afternoon.
I am so, so sorry. I can't imagine how awful that must be to not be with her right now. I'm so glad to hear that she is doing better this afternoon. I feel helpless but know that you are very, very loved.
First off, thanks, Eric, for the update on Elena! I checked in first thing this morning to see if there had been some good news, and since there wasn't anything posted, thought I would leave you guys a comment here...and, lo & behold! your comments that she is feeling better! Any little bit of good news is music to our ears!
I love that you both (all) see the glass half full (for the most part)! I know that there are those very low times, but you keep pushing forward...I know that Heavenly Father is watching over all of you, but especially those two little ones who have been thru more than they should at their young age...so happy that they are both doing better, cause I know that makes mom & dad feel better!
We love you guys so very much...you are in our thoughts & prayers...constantly!!
Stupid cancer! Im sorry you have so much to worry about. I wish I could make it all go away for you. I too am always amazed at how those "tender mercies" seem to come at the right time. Please know that you are ALWAYS in my prayers and Im sure all will go well on Monday! Hang in there "friend I've never met"!!
Briana,
My heart just breaks with the feelings of lonliness you explained as you saw Eric and Elena driving off. There is such a feeling of helplessness and I know exactly how that feels. It is so awful. There is such a burden and a weight that rests upon those of us who struggle with children with cancer.
I am thankful that you have seent he blessings and that your eyes are open to seeing them. You are a wonderful example of us.
You guys are really doing so well through this difficult time. Please know that we are praying for you and for Elena!
You guys have been in my thoughts this weekend. Fasted with you too. Hopefully it's just a viral thing- we see that a lot.
You are in our thoughts and prayers so often and all day today. We so admire your faithfulness and your recognition of blessings in spite of/or because of all these trials that are in your life. We love you all and wish we could help...wave the magic wand...
